Replace, Refinish, or Convert?

Refinishing can make a sound tub look better for a while, but it does not fix a cracked fiberglass floor, a leaking drain, or a tub that flexes when you step in. If the tub moves, leaks, or has damage underneath, replacing it is the lasting fix.

If nobody in the house takes baths anymore, consider a tub-to-shower conversion instead. If you do want a tub, replacement is the chance to choose a deeper soaking tub, a better-fitting alcove tub, or a tub with an easier step-in height.

Tub size matters. Most alcove tubs come in a standard length, but older homes sometimes have unusual sizes that limit the choices. We measure carefully and tell you what fits before anything is ordered.

What We Find Under Old Tubs

The tub is where years of small leaks end up. In older homes in Newhall, the city's oldest area, and in some of the earlier houses in Saugus and Canyon Country, where homes range from pre-1960s builds to 21st-century construction, it is common to find a softened subfloor or stained framing once the tub comes out. We show you what we find and agree on the repair in writing before continuing.

Cast-iron tubs are heavy, and getting one out of a second-floor bathroom sometimes means breaking it up in place. Fiberglass and acrylic tubs come out more easily. Either way, we protect the floors and stairs on the way out.

Licensing and Permits

Tub replacement is plumbing work, and California licenses contractors through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). B-2 scope includes tiling, flooring, drywall, and minor plumbing and electrical fixture work, which covers a typical tub swap. Moving the drain to a new location or rerouting supply lines is a larger job, and a B-2 contractor cannot make structural changes to load-bearing walls or substantially alter major plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems.

When a permit is needed we file it with the City of Santa Clarita Permit Center (Building & Safety) at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd and schedule the inspection before the surround goes on. If the rest of the room needs work too, see full bathroom remodeling; for ideas on the shower side of a tub-and-shower combo, see our shower remodel page.

Choosing the Right Tub

Acrylic tubs are light, warm to the touch, and easy to repair. Enameled steel is affordable but can chip. Cast iron holds heat and lasts for decades but is heavy and costs more. A deeper soaking tub needs a larger water heater to fill it comfortably, so we check that too.

If someone in the house has trouble stepping into a standard tub, look at lower-sided models or a walk-in shower instead. We will show you the trade-offs plainly.

Keeping the House Clean

A tub replacement is a messy job compressed into a small room. We lay down floor protection from the door to the bathroom, seal the doorway with plastic, and remove debris as we go rather than piling it in the house. The toilet and sink usually stay usable for most of the job. When the new tub is set, we fill it to check the drain and look for leaks before the surround goes on, then walk through the finished work with you. Product details for the tub and valve, and the signed-off permit when one was needed, go into your project folder so you have them if you sell the house.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to replace a bathtub?

Usually a few days for a straight swap, longer if the subfloor needs repair or the surround is retiled. Any inspection by the City of Santa Clarita Permit Center is scheduled before the walls close.

Do I need a permit to replace a tub?

A like-for-like swap that does not change the drain or valve often does not. Moving the drain usually does, and we file it with the City of Santa Clarita Permit Center.

How do I know a tub installer is licensed?

Look up the license with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) and confirm a $25,000 contractor's license bond is on file. Get the scope, price, and schedule in writing.
