Low Curb or No Curb?
A low-curb shower has a short threshold, usually a couple of inches, that keeps water in while being easy to step over. It works in almost any bathroom and is the simpler build.
A curbless shower has no threshold at all: the bathroom floor slopes gently into the shower, often toward a linear drain. It is the easiest to use, including for a wheelchair or a shower chair, but it takes more work. The floor in the shower area often has to be lowered so the slope works, which can mean adjusting the framing below.
We look at your floor structure at the estimate and tell you plainly which options fit your house.
What We Build In
Linear drain
A long drain that lets the floor slope one way and suits large tiles.
Grab-bar blocking
Solid backing in the walls so bars can be added now or later.
Handheld shower
A slide bar with a handheld head alongside the fixed head.
Bench or seat
A built-in bench or a fold-down seat where space allows.

Licensing and Permits
Building a walk-in shower means plumbing changes and sometimes framing changes. California licenses contractors through the Contractors State License Board (CSLB), and B-2 scope includes tiling, flooring, drywall, and minor plumbing and electrical fixture work. If the floor framing must be cut or reinforced to recess the shower, remember that a B-2 contractor cannot make structural changes to load-bearing walls or substantially alter major plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems; that work needs a B General Building Contractor license or the right specialty trade, and our estimate says so.
We file permits with the City of Santa Clarita Permit Center (Building & Safety) at City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd and schedule inspections while the floor and walls are open.
Planning for Now and Later
Many homeowners build a walk-in shower because someone in the house needs it today. Others build it because they plan to stay in the home for decades. Either way, a few choices make a big difference: slip-resistant floor tile, a valve you can reach from outside the spray, good lighting, and enough room to turn around.
In two-story homes in Valencia and Saugus, the shower is often upstairs over a living space, which makes careful waterproofing even more important. We flood-test the pan before tile goes down.
If a full walk-in is more than you need, a shower remodel with a low curb may be enough. For a whole-room plan, start with full bathroom remodeling.
Safety Details That Matter
The small details of a walk-in shower decide how safe it feels. Slip-resistant floor tile with plenty of grout lines gives better grip than large polished tile. A handheld shower on a slide bar lets a seated person rinse easily. Placing the valve near the entry means you can set the temperature before stepping in. A fold-down seat or a built-in bench gives a place to rest, and grab bars anchored into solid blocking will hold real weight. Good lighting inside the shower and a night light nearby help too. We go through each of these at the estimate so the finished shower suits the people who use it, today and in the years ahead. If you are planning for a family member with specific needs, tell us and we will plan clearances, bench height, and fixture placement around them. A shower built for real needs is easier for everyone in the house to use, and it is far simpler to plan it right now than to retrofit it later.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can any bathroom have a curbless shower?
Not always. It depends on the floor structure and where the drain can go. If framing must change, a B-2 contractor cannot make structural changes to load-bearing walls or substantially alter major plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems, so the right license matters. We check at the estimate.
How long does a walk-in shower take to build?
Usually one to three weeks depending on whether the floor is recessed, plus any inspection by the City of Santa Clarita Permit Center.
Do walk-in showers leak more?
Not when they are built right. A sloped floor, a properly sized drain, and a continuous membrane keep water in. We flood-test before tile, and the work is inspected by the City of Santa Clarita Permit Center when a permit applies.
